Batteries
What battery do the Wizard detectors use?
Both the Lumber Wizard 5 and Little Wizard 2.5 use a standard 9-volt battery. We recommend a fresh Duracell (non-lithium) for best results.
Why does battery strength matter so much?
Detection sensitivity drops as the battery drains — often without any obvious sign. A weak battery can cause the detector to miss small fasteners like staples or brad nails. Always use a fresh battery before scanning, especially when working with high-risk material like pallet wood or reclaimed barn lumber.
How do I know when to replace the battery?
The battery powers the detection coil. Strongest detection comes from strong, fully charged batteries. If the detector seems less responsive than usual, or fails to detect known metal objects you're testing by hand, replace the battery first before assuming anything else is wrong. Don't rely on a battery from your drawer — use a new one.
Can I use lithium 9V batteries?
We do not recommend lithium 9V batteries. Standard alkaline batteries (Duracell recommended) provide the most consistent performance.
Detection
How deep can the Wizard detectors find metal?
Detection depth depends on the size of the metal object. Larger objects like bolts and lag screws are detectable at greater depths. Small fasteners like finish nails and large staples are typically detectable up to 1–2 inches below the surface, depending on the nail gauge and battery strength. Can the detectors find staples?
Yes — but technique matters. Use a fresh battery, move slowly, make overlapping passes, and scan both faces of the board. Staple legs run perpendicular to the surface, so scanning in both directions (along and across the grain) improves detection reliability.
Can the detectors find small brad nails?
Yes. Both the Lumber Wizard 5 and Little Wizard 2.5 are calibrated for close-surface, small-fastener detection. A fresh battery and slow scanning technique are essential for reliable brad nail detection.
Will the detector produce false positives on wood?
Occasionally, dense knots or mineral inclusions in wood can produce a weak signal. If you get an alert and can't find metal after extraction, re-scan the area — if the signal is gone, it was likely a natural inclusion. If it persists, dig deeper.
Do I need to scan both sides of a board?
Yes. Metal embedded closer to one face may not produce a strong signal from the opposite side. Always scan both faces, both edges, and both ends for complete coverage — especially with thick stock, beams, or pallet wood.
Tuning
How do I tune the Lumber Wizard 5?
Power it on and wait 5 seconds. The Wizard 5 auto-tunes itself — no adjustment needed. Keep it away from large metal objects, machinery, and concrete with rebar during tuning. Watch the Lumber Wizard setup video for a visual walkthrough.
How do I tune the Little Wizard 2.5?

Where should I tune the detector?
Always tune away from metal workbenches, large machinery, concrete floors with rebar, and electrical wiring. Move to a clear area of your shop — even a few feet away from a metal surface makes a difference.
Which Detector Is Right for Me?
What's the difference between the Lumber Wizard 5 and the Little Wizard 2.5?

I mostly do trim and furniture work with narrow stock. Which should I get?

Using Your Detector
What's the correct scanning technique?

What do I do when the detector finds metal?

Is pallet wood safe to mill after scanning?
Pallet wood requires extra care. Scan both faces, all edges, and both ends. Pallet nails are often ring-shank or spiral-shank, which can break off below the surface during disassembly. Always re-scan after initial breakdown cuts. See our pallet wood guide for full protocol.
Can these detectors scan logs?
The Lumber Wizard 5 and Little Wizard 2.5 are designed for scanning boards and dimensional lumber, not raw logs. For log-scale metal detection, industrial inline log scanners are the appropriate tool.
