OUT OF THE CLOSET

You treat your closet like a bottomless pit. Instead of adding to the pile, add some shelves. You'll want to make sure, though, that they're anchored into the studs of the wall-and finding a few good studs is no easy task. Most people will search by simply tapping the wall. Not exactly foolproof. To be more precise, Brad Staggs, host of a home-repair call-in show on DIY, suggest using the Little Wizard Woodworking Metal Detector($19.95). The device will help you pinpoint the studs by sensing the screws holding the drywall in place.
